How to make Shea Butter into a Cream

How to make Soft and Smooth Shea Butter

Shea Butter is the key ingredient in many Skincare products. Buying Shea Butter in it's natural form is excellent value as you are only buying the key ingredient. But Natural Shea Butter comes in crumbly blocks that is not easy to apply.

Mail order Shea Butter

Mail order Organic Shea Butter arrives by post like this. The first step is to melt the crumbly version in a heat proof container.

Melting Shea Butter

Then scoop some butter into the it for melting.
This can be done in 2 ways:

Melting Shea Butter by Microwave

 1. In a microwave 30 secs at a time on high until it is liquified, be careful when removing and handling the hot container.

Melting Shea Butter by hot water

Weight it down until the level of the butter is below the water line or use a rubber band to strap the jar to the bowl before adding the hot water. Be careful when handling hot water.

Shea Butter melting

Leave it alone until the butter has completely become a liquid. The time it takes depends on the amount of butter that you are melting at a time

It is Optional to add any essential oils while it's liquefied.

Freezing Shea Butter

Once you have the melted Shea Butter in the container, close it with the lid and put it in the freezer.

Creamy Satin Smooth Shea Butter

After 15-20mins, the butter will have turned hard and smooth, like lip balm with a Satin finish.  Leave to warm up to room temperature and it will soften to a cream.

Re-use old tins jars compacts

This is a good opportunity to re-use old tins, jars and compacts.  Larger jars are good for the bathroom cabinet and smaller ones make cute little lip balm carriers. You can also use them for gifts!
